Are Facebook Messages Private?

Written by Forum Admin on November 14, 2010 | Posted in Facebook Help

A friend from work and I sometimes chat on Facebook message. Nothing bad, just routine stuff like who’s bringing what for lunch, etc. I just wondered if those messages are private or if everyone can see them. This is not a wall post or a chat. It’s the message system. Is there any way someone can track these messages if they wanted to do so. I realize that anything can be hacked if one tries hard enough. I’m just wondering about a more routine kind of search.

They are private; other people can’t see what you send to other people.

It’s private. So you can talk about other people without worrying.

Messages aren’t visible unless you’re part of the conversation. But if the police show up and ask Facebook to see those messages, they’ll get to see them.

yes. those messages are private. they are also private through the chat system. but no one can read them unless you give someone your password. people can’t track them.
